Working 20s: Underwhelmed, Underpaid, Underestimated

Corporate America and generation X have a lot to say about millennials in the workforce. We’ve been classified as entitled, narcissistic, self-interested, unfocused and lazy by every business publication from Forbes to Fortune. Well, here’s what we have to say to Corporate Americas and the Baby boomers who run it: Every millennial I know feels professionally underwhelmed and discontent. That’s because we are fundamentally engineered to reject Corporate America. Millennials are pushers: we push boundaries and buttons. We’re anti-establishment. We inherently reject structure, routine, and institution.  We’re not subservient. We have opinions and we’re not afraid to voice them. We’re…

For Introverts Who Have Considered Social-Suicide When People Are Too Much

You know that girl at the party who drank just enough tequila shots to put her confidence level right under Beyoncé, so she’s boldly dancing around the party flirting, complimenting and inappropriately joking with everyone from the aspiring Instagram models to the socially awkward guys in the corner? Her comedic nature is exacerbated by liquid courage so the unsolicited commentary is undeniably hilarious and you can’t help but be at least slightly amused by her. She’s in the center of a small group of cute, well-dressed girls who spent the first 20 minutes observing the scene, but somewhere between Rihanna’s…

Talking 20s: Digitally Savvy, Socially Challenged …

I’m a cord-cutting, iPhone yielding, Snapchat-obsessed, multitasking, texting-and-driving twentysomething- year old. And I’m all for millennial rights; but I absolutely draw the line at the alarming decline of our communication and social skills. It’s very unsettling that I could have an in-depth conversation with someone, via Twitter, over the course of two weeks; where we discuss everything from political views to pop culture; but when we see each other in person … nothing …nada… radio silence …. crickets …  The irony of this generation is that the more technologically advanced and “social media-savvy” we get, the more interpersonally challenged and…

Wise Words From A Decent Man

I’ve been getting a lot of positive feed back to my last post about losing/breaking up with friends; which is both rewarding and alarming. I’m happy that so many people could relate, but I’m also a little concerned that we need to put out an Amber Alert for all the lost friends out there.      I’d love to bask in the glory of being “wise beyond my years,” but I’d be lying if I said I reached this level of maturity all by myself. Sometimes you just need to hear – or in this case read – the right things. For…

It’s Not Me, It’s You: Breaking Up With Friends

It’s been 335 days since I broke up with my high school best friend. I’d love to say that the breakup was amicable and we’re still regular friends, but that’s not the case. In fact, it had all the ingredients of a bad breakup: it happened via text message, tempers flared, harsh things were said out of anger, and there was an eruption of years of built up aggression and unspoken grievances.  Despite our explosive ending, however, I’m not upset with her. I would never talk bad about her or spill any of her secrets. I would most definitely be…

Its A Text, Its A Tweet, Its Our Attention Span Getting Shorter

I don’t think we should acknowledge attention deficit as a disorder anymore. In fact, if your attention span is longer than 10 seconds, YOU’RE the one with the disorder.  I read somewhere that the average person’s attention span has dropped from 12 to 8 seconds since the start of the digital age; that’s one second LESS than a gold fish. And that’s the “average” person. For millennials, I’m pretty sure our attention spans stop promptly at about 5 seconds.                                           …

Dear College Senior, The Grass Is Not Greener!

If there were one pivotal time period during your twenties, I would definitely declare it to be the last semester of college; albeit, I’m a little early in my twenties to be making such a declaration. However, at this point, I think those last few months leading up to graduation contain the most precious of times to be cherished as they will likely never occur again. Personally, my last few months at Howard University were characterized by underwhelming anxiety about post-graduate life, constant bar hopping; late nights of witty banter with my closest friends, a complete disregard for any and…
