Thou Shalt Not Commit ADULTING!

If I had a dollar for every time someone ever told me “being an adult is not fun,” I probably wouldn’t have to watch my paychecks disappear by 12:15am on the 15th and 30th of every month. Since I was seven-years-old and I made the unfortunate mistake of wishing that I was a grownup, I’ve been lectured and warned about the perils of adulthood by every coming-of-age television show, movie, novel, song, middle-aged person and senior citizen in the world. They told me again and again and again. They wrote it in birthday cards. They merched it on bumper stickers,…

There Must Be Drugs In The Lemonade!

So, unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure you know by now that Beyoncé is pregnant with twins. As a matter of fact, even if you have been living under a rock you probably STILL know that Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is expecting twins. Not even SpongeBob Square pants and the citizens of Bikini Bottom could escape that news. Even if you managed to avoid all the blogs; radio stations and news outlet, it was the topic of literally EVERY other status, tweet and post across all the social media channels for like three days. I couldn’t make it…

For Introverts Who Have Considered Social-Suicide When People Are Too Much

You know that girl at the party who drank just enough tequila shots to put her confidence level right under Beyoncé, so she’s boldly dancing around the party flirting, complimenting and inappropriately joking with everyone from the aspiring Instagram models to the socially awkward guys in the corner? Her comedic nature is exacerbated by liquid courage so the unsolicited commentary is undeniably hilarious and you can’t help but be at least slightly amused by her. She’s in the center of a small group of cute, well-dressed girls who spent the first 20 minutes observing the scene, but somewhere between Rihanna’s…

Talking 20s: Digitally Savvy, Socially Challenged …

I’m a cord-cutting, iPhone yielding, Snapchat-obsessed, multitasking, texting-and-driving twentysomething- year old. And I’m all for millennial rights; but I absolutely draw the line at the alarming decline of our communication and social skills. It’s very unsettling that I could have an in-depth conversation with someone, via Twitter, over the course of two weeks; where we discuss everything from political views to pop culture; but when we see each other in person … nothing …nada… radio silence …. crickets …  The irony of this generation is that the more technologically advanced and “social media-savvy” we get, the more interpersonally challenged and…

Wise Words From A Decent Man

I’ve been getting a lot of positive feed back to my last post about losing/breaking up with friends; which is both rewarding and alarming. I’m happy that so many people could relate, but I’m also a little concerned that we need to put out an Amber Alert for all the lost friends out there.      I’d love to bask in the glory of being “wise beyond my years,” but I’d be lying if I said I reached this level of maturity all by myself. Sometimes you just need to hear – or in this case read – the right things. For…

It’s Not Me, It’s You: Breaking Up With Friends

It’s been 335 days since I broke up with my high school best friend. I’d love to say that the breakup was amicable and we’re still regular friends, but that’s not the case. In fact, it had all the ingredients of a bad breakup: it happened via text message, tempers flared, harsh things were said out of anger, and there was an eruption of years of built up aggression and unspoken grievances.  Despite our explosive ending, however, I’m not upset with her. I would never talk bad about her or spill any of her secrets. I would most definitely be…

True Life: I’m A Terrible Texter

So, last month I wrote a post about how we shouldn’t acknowledge attention deficit as a disorder anymore because pretty much everyone born after 1985 has the attention span of a Vine video (6 seconds). What we should acknowledge, however, is Text Back Tetrinitis; which I made up. But it’s basically meant to describe people who genuinely have an issue with texting back … and by people, I mean me!  I get yelled at by my family and friends ALL the time because I don’t always text them back AND, at any given time, I have upwards of 100 unread…

Its A Text, Its A Tweet, Its Our Attention Span Getting Shorter

I don’t think we should acknowledge attention deficit as a disorder anymore. In fact, if your attention span is longer than 10 seconds, YOU’RE the one with the disorder.  I read somewhere that the average person’s attention span has dropped from 12 to 8 seconds since the start of the digital age; that’s one second LESS than a gold fish. And that’s the “average” person. For millennials, I’m pretty sure our attention spans stop promptly at about 5 seconds.                                           …

Happy Graduversary To Me!

It’s been one year since I graduated from Howard University. Five hundred, twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes. How do you measure a year? “In truths that she learned or times that [s]he cried. In bridges [s]he burned or the way that she died.” – Seasons of Love (“Rent”)  College may be a 2 to 4 year process, but the learning doesn’t stop after graduation. Let’s talk about the truths that I learned over the past year. The truth is that there’s an American nightmare to be had before you can live the American dream. It’s plagued with financial instability, ambivalent career goals,…

A Poem From Nana: DON’T QUIT

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low, and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don’t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about, When he might have won had we stuck it out; Don’t give up though the pace seems slow, You may succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned…
